Community Development Practice Hub

Community Development Practice Hub

The Community Development Practice Hub is a resource for people and organisations who ‘work with’ people in Birmingham, supporting them to take collective action to make changes to things that are important to them and their communities. It aims to connect, inspire and upskill community development practitioners across Birmingham.

The hub is funded by Birmingham City Council, led by BVSC and supported by Thrive Together Birmingham.

Come join us on this exciting journey, as we collaborate with the sector to offer a tailored approach with a focus on Birmingham-specific learning, challenges, and achievements.

At Oddingley Hall in West Heath, a small but vibrant community project is making a big impact. Thanks to a Microgrant from the Community Development Practice Hub, Donna Wells (Crafty Queen) has been able to share her sewing skills with others, bringing people together, tackling isolation, and creating a space where creativity and friendship can thrive.

A simple idea that brought people together

For several years, Donna has been a regular at the Coffee Mornings at Oddingley Hall. In early 2024, Hannah and Jemma from Redeemer Church asked if she would be interested in running a few skill swap sessions to teach sewing. Donna agreed, and soon, a group of enthusiastic participants were gathering to learn and create.

Within these first sessions, everyone who took part made bags. The community enjoyed getting involved and learning new skills.

How the microgrant made a difference

Donna received funding through a microgrant provided by the Community Development Practice Hub, an initiative funded by Birmingham City Council and led by BVSC which aims to develop creative ways for people to be actively involved in their local communities, to test and learn from new approaches to designing services which aim to make people’s lives healthier and happier. She also received a small grant from the Selly Oak Neighbourhood Network Scheme (NNS) to lead some embroidery sessions at Stirchley Baths. The Microgrant, recommended to Donna, provided vital support to get the project off the ground. It helped with advertising, purchasing materials, and ensuring the sessions could continue.

The project serves people over 50, those with disabilities, and vulnerable members of the community. The biggest impact has been helping people come out of isolation, learn new skills, and connect with others. I’ve seen friendships form, confidence grow, and mental health improve” says Donna.

Each Monday afternoon from 1:00 to 2:30 pm, the sewing group gathers as part of the Redeemer Coffee Afternoon. In a relaxed and welcoming environment, up to eight participants work on projects such as cushion covers, bags, gift bags, coasters, tissue holders, and carrier bag holders. There’s plenty of chatting, laughter and, of course, biscuits!

For many, this group has been a lifeline. Participants have rediscovered old skills, built confidence, and enjoyed the social aspect of working on something creative together.

Here’s what some of them had to say:

Looking ahead

The sewing sessions have been such a success that Donna is now completing Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) training, free training provided by the Community Development Practice Hub. ABCD training is all about building stronger, more connected, and compassionate communities. The course explores the principles and practices of great community building, offering practical tools and tips to help people take action in their own neighbourhoods. It’s designed for anyone who wants to uncover the strengths and assets in their community and bring people together to create lasting change to build on the project’s impact.

Donna’s goal is simple: keep the sessions running for as long as possible and involve even more of the community with the only current challenge being space. "We’d love to welcome more people, but the room just isn’t big enough,” says Donna.

Her advice to anyone thinking of starting a community project is Go for it! It will help both you and the community!
