Giving Tuesday: Time given is time well spent Every year, on the Tuesday after Black Friday, we mark Giving Tuesday. The idea may have started in the United States, but in recent times, it has grown into a global movement that inspires millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity. Put simply, it’s a reminder that generosity isn’t only about reaching for your purse or wallet. It’s about looking out for one another in ways that actually make a difference. Giving comes in many forms! You can pass on skills you’ve built up, campaign for something you’re passionate about. You can donate items such as food or clothes; organise a community event such as a street or park clean-up or a coffee morning; or offer a listening ear or a bit of practical help to someone nearby. And you can give your time by taking part in more formal volunteering. Check out Volunteer Brum Volunteers are often the reason a community project keeps going. Charities and local groups depend on people who turn up, get stuck in, and make things happen. If you’re running an organisation and haven’t considered involving volunteers, this is a good moment to think about it. Fresh ideas, different perspectives, and an extra pair of hands can make a world of difference. There’s a range of useful guidance on BVSC’s website to help you get started. When you’ve worked out how volunteers can play a part in your work, you can post your roles on Volunteer Brum. It’s simple to use and helps you reach people who genuinely want to get involved and make a difference. Becky Isaac, BVSC’s Head of Communities, Older Adults and Volunteering commented “Donations matter, but it’s volunteers who bring the work to life. When someone gives their time, it creates a connection you simply can’t buy.” Giving Tuesday isn’t about fuss or fanfare. It’s about doing something that counts. If you have an hour, a skill, or simply the desire to help, there’s a place for you. And if you’re an organisation ready to welcome volunteers, there’s no better day to start.
