What is Race Equality Week?

  • Race Equality Week takes place 3 – 9 February 2025
  • Race Equality Week is led by Community Interest Company Race Equality Matters (REM) and is an annual UK-wide movement uniting hundreds of thousands of organisations and individuals to address the barriers to race equality in the workplace.
  • Race Equality Week 2025 aims to keep the momentum going and accelerate change by uniting thousands of organisations into action to seriously address race inequality in the workplace.

2025 Theme

  • The 2025 Theme is #EveryActionCounts – aiming to galvanise everyone to take action
  • Only 40 % of the REM community believes their organisation focuses on action, change, and impact, and not just words.
  • 26% believe that less than a quarter of allies are actually helping to tackle race inequality.
  • 64% said their senior leaders and managers are committed to tackling race inequality, but only 46% said their senior leaders and managers are making an impact in tackling race inequality.

Race Inequality in the Birmingham VCFSE Sector

These national findings are sadly reflected in the Birmingham Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector.

The Birmingham VCFSE sector Mini Race Impact Summit, highlighted that that radical and long-term change and action is needed to tackle race inequality.

The Summit’s Final VCFSE Position Paper includes an Action Plan highlighting actions that we can take as a VCFSE sector, and as individual organisations on race equality.

One of the key takeaways from the Position Paper is that that there is a lack of knowledge and skills across the VCFSE sector on equality, diversity and inclusion issues, and that greater education and awareness raising on race equality issues is required to support action.

An Anti-Racist Birmingham

Alongside publishing the final VCFSE Position Paper, BVSC (Birmingham Voluntary Service Council) have signed the Anti-Racist City pledge and we encourage other VCFSE organisations across the City to also sign this and get involved in working towards an Anti-Racist City.

Involvement in Race Equality Week and working towards an Anti-Racist City provides VCFSE sector organisations with a great opportunity to raise awareness of race equality, and the action we can take, supported by a range of campaign materials, events and resources.
